In this video, we remove the encoder by first taking off the covers on the back of the machine. We begin by removing the Phillips head screws that secure the first cover, then lift that cover away. We then remove the four screws holding the secondary cover and carefully take it off. On this machine, there is a large lip, so we loosen the screws on the thread holder to allow the cover to come free.
With the rear covers removed, we take off the back deck. We remove the two screws located at the back of the machine near the edge of the deck. Because there is a lip on the back of the deck, we gently lift it up and over the back edge of the machine, wiggling it toward us as we pull. We are careful to release the spring-loaded clips that hold the front of the table in place.
Next, we follow the encoder wire down into the machine to its connection point. We cut the two wire ties with a wire cutter, then disconnect the connection. To remove the encoder itself, we loosen the screws on the collar, including the screw behind the bottom area and the adjacent screw after turning the hand wheel slightly for access. We then remove the two Allen screws from the bracket, which also secure the encoder. Once the second screw is removed, the encoder slides straight out toward us, and we are ready to install the new encoder.
If you’re opening up the machine for encoder service, it’s a good time to stock basic embroidery supplies.
