In this video, we adjust the throw, or travel, of the moving mandible on an embroidery machine. We often make this adjustment when the machine is getting thread pullouts, especially when the bobbin thread is not being placed under the holder correctly after trimming. To begin, we remove the needle plate to expose the trimming mechanism, then remove the back cover plate by taking out the four screws that hold it in place.
With the back cover removed, we expose where the trimmer connects at the rear of the machine. We then remove one of the screws that holds the tubular frames onto the machine, which is a 4 millimeter Allen head screw, and place that screw into the shaft that runs through the cam. This helps keep the shaft from dropping down while we loosen the adjustment screw.
Next, we check the throw of the blade by putting the machine into trim, making sure the head is turned off, removing the bobbin, and pressing start to watch the trim cycle. We should see just the tip of the moving mandible extend past the fixed mandible. If that is not what we see, we loosen the adjustment screw, pull the blade into the position where it should be, hold the small screw up so it does not drop, and tighten the set screw again. We then run another trim cycle and repeat the process as needed until the throw is adjusted properly.
Because trimmer performance directly affects thread handling, test your adjustment with dependable embroidery thread.
