In this video, we show how to oil the areas underneath the needle plate, including the trimming assembly, and then service the rotary hook assembly. To maintain the trimming assembly area, we first remove the needle plate by taking out the two straight slot screws at the back with an offset tool. We completely remove those two screws, but we do not remove the set screw in the front. We then wiggle the needle plate free and lift it off.
With the needle plate removed, we identify the silver trimmer area, including the moving mandible and the fixed mandible. We apply a very thin coat of oil on top of the mandible and then wipe away any excess. We do not leave a puddle of oil in this area. We also place a single drop of oil next to the screw where it pivots and another drop on the linkage where it pivots. This trimming assembly maintenance should be done once a month.
Next, we oil the rotary hook assembly. We carefully remove the bobbin case, taking care not to pull on the picker, since it sets the trim length. We then locate the tip of the rotary hook and place one drop of oil right at the V of the hook using a needle oiler. After that, we move to the control panel and execute a trim twice by pressing the trim button and then start, and repeating that sequence one more time.
Finally, we reinstall the bobbin case and re-thread the needle that was unthreaded. It is important not to forget the bobbin case, as leaving it out can cause a bird nest. Once that is done, the oiling procedure is complete. This rotary hook oiling should be performed approximately every four to six hours of running time.
