In this video, we walk through the proper procedure for changing an embroidery machine needle. To start, we loosen the screw on the needle holder by turning it counterclockwise about a half to a full turn—being careful not to remove it completely to avoid the assembly falling apart. We then remove the old needle by wiggling and pulling it out. Before inserting the new needle, we identify the "scarf," the cutout section on the back of the needle, and ensure it faces the back of the machine. Holding the needle with the scarf against the pointer finger makes insertion easier and more precise.
When inserting the new needle, we push it up until it stops, making sure the needle eye faces directly forward or slightly toward the right shoulder. After seating the needle fully, we tighten the screw securely. We thread the needle carefully, ensuring the thread doesn't wrap around it. The thread is guided behind the thread guide, through the presser foot, and up into the holding spring, trimming it to leave about ¾ to 1 inch of slack past the spring. We caution against using another needle to help with alignment, as it could create a burr and cause thread breaks; a wooden toothpick is a safer alternative if alignment assistance is needed.
Finally, we share a useful technique for safer and easier needle replacement: using hemostats, a type of locking tweezers. Hemostats help reduce the risk of eye injury and make it easier to align the needle properly. By aligning the hemostat handles with the needle eye, you can insert the needle more accurately without straining your vision.
