Threading Your Embroidery Machine from Scratch

In this video, we walk through the full process of threading an embroidery machine. We start by threading the thread tree, guiding the thread through three guides—back, middle, and front—before passing it through the pre-tensioner, making sure it is properly seated between the tension washers. On newer machines without upper and lower tabs, we place the thread into the slot of the rod that passes through the washers instead. We repeat this process at the top of the embroidery head, threading through the thread guide and pre-tensioner, always ensuring the thread is positioned correctly between the washers, even if the mechanism lacks wing tabs.

Next, we cover threading the lower part of the sewing machine. We ensure the thread passes between the washer and into the slot, then wrap it one full time around the upper thread sensor, which detects thread breaks or low bobbin levels. We continue by wrapping the thread one and a half times around the main tensioning device, starting on the right-hand side and using the V-shaped channel, with only a half turn needed at the top. Open-backed thread guides are easily threaded by pulling the thread from behind and through.

Throughout the threading process, it's important to maintain downward pressure on the thread to keep it taut. Before threading the upper thread guide, we recommend shortening the thread to make handling easier.

Finally, we demonstrate threading the sewing machine itself. Using tweezers for tricky areas, we guide the thread right to left through the bottom part, then through the thread take-up lever, the middle thread guide, and the lower thread guide. We highlight the importance of having a clean thread end for threading the needle. After passing the thread through the needle, we guide it behind the thread guide, through the presser foot, up into the holding spring,
