In this video, we cover how to center the hoop when setting up a design on your embroidery machine. We start by moving the number one needle into the sewing position, as it's the easiest reference point to see—along with needle fifteen, since they sit at the extreme ends of the embroidery head. To ensure the head physically moves and properly selects needle one, we first press an arbitrary needle number (like two), then press one on the control panel. This forces the machine to reposition and confirms that needle one is active.
Once the number one needle is in position, we can center the hoop using two different methods. The first method involves visually aligning the left-center-most screw on the hoop with the number one needle. Using the pantograph movement controls (the four arrows on the panel), we move the hoop left, right, forward, or backward. The center button adjusts movement speed between low, medium, and high for finer control. We recommend using medium speed to line up the hoop precisely with the needle.
The second method is known as the "rubber band trick." We place an elastic band over the hoop, twist it halfway, and stretch it across to the opposite side. This forms a crosshair marking the center of the hoop. We then place the hoop on the machine and align the number one needle directly over the crosshairs created by the band.
We demonstrate that this centering technique works consistently across all standard hoop sizes—9, 12, 15, or 18 centimeters. With the hoop centered and secured, we are ready to proceed to the next step of the setup.
