 Sewing on Leather

Sewing on leather can be easy when you keep a few simple rules in mind:

  • Slow the machine down.
  • Always use a wedge-point needle. A wedge-point slices into the leather rather than punching holes into it.
  • Increase the stitch length. Perforating the leather too frequently can cause ripping.
  • Decrease the density.
  • Delete all short stitches.
  • Use tearaway backing on the front and back to reduce hoop burn (after hooping remove front backing from design area).
  • Always practice on a scrap hide (or vinyl) before attempting on garment. Removing stitches may weaken leather and cause tearing.
